Previous experience is not necessary as each Shared Lives carer brings their own unique skills and experience to the job. We ask that you have a desire to help people, life experience and a commitment and positive approach to supporting vulnerable adults.

Shared Lives Carers open their homes to support people from the age of 18, with learning disabilities, mental health, autism and Asperger’s, physical disabilities, sensory impairment or who are living with dementia and older people.

For You it provides:
  • A flexible, interesting job with a fantastic work life balance
  • Great opportunities for skills development, working as a self-employed professional with support from our team
You can offer three types of service from your home
  • Long term – where the person would live with you and your family
  • Short Term Breaks (respite) – where the person would come and stay for the odd night, weekend or week

By becoming a Shared Lives Carer you make a real difference to the people you support, giving them improved:

  • Support
This role is not without its challenges, but we believe it is one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do! You are supported via our support and advice line 24/7 and will also be complemented with your own Shared Lives Officer, who will visit and support you in your new role.

We offer a comprehensive training programme that you can complete flexibly around your commitments, mainly accessed by eLearning modules, with support provided leading to a rewarding role.

Shared Lives Plus is a national organisation that offers guidance, best practice, a community of people sharing their lives, legal advice and insurance. We provide your first year’s full membership.

Shared Lives carers are assessed and will be paid according to the type of support they provide. Special HMRC tax arrangements cover most Shared Lives placements and many carers do not have to pay income tax on their earnings.
