Job Purpose
To work as part of a team to deliver a seasonally based best value, customer-focussed service throughout Leicestershire and occasionally, surrounding counties. You will maintain the condition of the road network through the application of surface dressing material over the summer period, and, during winter months, provide precautionary night salting treatments to ensure safe passage along the highway.
Activities included in this job specification are: Surface Dressing; Winter Service Gritting; Snow Clearance; Flood Prevention Stock Preparation.
Key Job Functions
The role of the Seasonal Treatments Operative follows a work pattern dictated by the seasons, that is, to resurface carriageways during the warmer summer months, and to switch to the night operation of gritters during the winter.
The Seasonal Treatments Operative will report to a Supervisor, and occasionally there may be a Site Team Leader present to manage tasks on site, particularly during the Surface Dressing period, who will take responsibility for the delivery of performance targets, and compliance with health and safety requirements during the day on site.
As the winter service requires you to work on your own driving the gritting lorry, you will be expected to take responsibility for your own safety (and that of the general public), by adhering to the policies and guidelines explained to you, including the requirements for acknowledging safe working via the Confirm app on phone or tablet. You take responsibility, at all times, for your own appearance on site, ensuring you adhere to the requirements for PPE which, if they differ from the norm, will be explained to you during the course of your briefing.
There will be occasions where milder weather means that gritting is not required. In this instance, alternative tasks will be given, such as the filling of sandbags, sign washing, night time gully cleansing, filling grit bins, white lining etc.
The Seasonal Treatments Operative will report in the winter to a designated depot from which the gritting routes will commence, or may be directed to a central depot for briefing on other activities. This will give the opportunity to hand over vehicle defect reports, timesheets, requests for holiday or other time off, and allows the raising of any issues, or to offer suggestions on better ways of working that can contribute to savings targets and efficiency.
