To support children, young people and families with SEND needs to be able to access information, advice, resources and services which will help to build and maintain their resilience and achievement of good outcomes.
  • A level three qualification in a relevant subject, e.g. nursery nurse plus the proven ability and experience to clearly demonstrate the skills, competencies and knowledge outlined below
  • Experience of working in an environment dealing with sensitive and confidential information
  • Experience of providing direct support to children and families with a range of needs, including children and families who have special educational needs and disabilities
  • Experience of working in a multi-agency environment which involves working in collaboration and partnership with colleagues from a range of agencies and services
  • Experience of working in children or family services within a health, social care or education context. This may be in either a statutory provider setting, or voluntary/community sector
  • Knowledge of what works in parenting and family functioning, for example knowledge of parenting strategies, mental health promotion activities, etc.
  • Good working knowledge of child protection procedures
  • Working knowledge of key areas such as housing, benefits including DLA and PIP, education, EHCPS and school allocations, primary health care, etc.
  • An understanding of the importance of monitoring impact and outcomes for the families receiving early help services.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office applications including Word.
  • Ability to work assertively and confidently with families to support swift progress towards agreed goals.
  • Commitment to supporting families to achieve the best possible outcomes by working in an inclusive, family/child centred way.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, with a positive ‘can do’ attitude, prepared to undertake a wide range of practical tasks to support families in achieving their goals
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with key partners who will be central to helping families achieve outcomes.
  • Ability to write succinct and analytical reports and case recording
  • Able to prioritise a demanding workload, taking a consistent approach to responding to children, young people, their families and other professionals
  • Able to follow procedures and guidelines and understand the importance of keeping up to date and accurate records.
  • A skilful communicator, able to convey important information to a range of different audiences which might include children and young people, parents, and professionals from a range of agencies
  • Confident in own abilities and able to work with minimum supervision, but also able to recognise where support is needed
  • A flexible approach to work, providing cover for colleagues as required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to work alongside colleagues from different agencies and services, using a focus of improving outcomes for children and young people to work through any differences or conflicts between individuals or agencies
  • An understanding of, and commitment to equal opportunities, and the ability to apply this to all situations
  • Must be able to perform all the duties and tasks of the job with reasonable adjustments, where appropriate, in accordance with the provisions of the Equality Act 2010
  • The post-holder must be willing to undertake further training within an early help professional development framework
