Salary Range: £19,947 - £21,168 p.a.
Several vacancies have become available in Highway Operations, Highways Delivery to work as part of a team that delivers a best value, customer-focussed service throughout Leicestershire and occasionally, surrounding counties. You will provide an excellent delivery and collection service for temporary traffic management signage for the Highway Delivery workforce. You will also support the provision of highway maintenance, construction, forestry and street lighting activities where stop/go boards are required to direct the flow of traffic and be responsible for safe temporary traffic management provisions for the site.
  • Various duties linked to temporary traffic management signage, delivery, collection, and practical traffic management to gain experience in technical practices; safe working procedures and use of equipment and power tools. The types of work include;-
    • Erection and removal of appropriate signs
    • Assisting with the scheduling of the resources required to effect distribution to, and collection from, given routes
    • Remain flexible at all times during the works, specifically if disruption is caused to the schedule through early or delayed finish times
    • Reading plans and drawings associated with any/all Traffic Management
    • Carry out daily routine checks and maintenance to appropriate vehicle and plant, complying with relevant legislation (e.g. driver’s hours regulations, European Drivers Regulations, safe loads and weights) to ensure safe and continued use. 
  • To work in close collaboration with the Sign Shop and Traffic Management Technicians, assisting where required in the workshop, and providing cover at peak or emergency times as required.
  • To take part, on request, in a Standby rota to assist in emergency situations to provide out of hours cover, receiving instruction to attend sites and making the area safe prior to permanent solutions being put in place.
  • To support the Supervisor or Site Team Leader by:
    • taking the role of lead operative as requested when working with other operatives on the same grade, with responsibility for ensuring the correct observance of Health and Safety directives with regards to personal protective equipment, application of Temporary Traffic Management requirements and the safe lifting and handling of materials and plant on site
    • ensuring daily performance targets are met, raising any issues in a timely manner with the Supervisor or Site Team Leader
    • taking the lead when working with temporary staff, to explain the requirements of the job, answer, or escalate to the Supervisor or Site Team Leader any queries and ensure they are made to feel part of the team
Special Factors:
The role may involve you carrying out activities outside of normal working hours, including night, weekends and public holidays, in all weather conditions to meet the needs of the service. It may also require you to support a call-out rota to cover evening, weekend and public holiday emergencies. [Exclusion will apply to employees aged under 21]
Working hours will normally start and finish at the depot; you will be responsible for getting to/from the depot on a daily basis.
Essential requirements:
  • Qualifications - NVQ 2 in Highways Maintenance or similar. Skilled Road-worker Trades Test Assessment & New Roads and Streetworks Act (NRSWA) Qualification (Operative)
  • Valid Driving Licence
  • Experience of working in a highways or civil engineering environment, acting as banksman/ signaller for other drivers, the safe installation of Temporary Traffic Management, including road closures and diversions & the installation, maintenance and removal of traffic control systems in a safe manner.
