Oak Field School is a Special School for 168 pupils aged 3-19 with a wide range of learning and physical disabilities, including many pupils with complex health needs. We are seeking a positive, proactive and organised School Medicines Assistant, who will work as one of a pair under the direction of the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team. They will receive training in medicines management / administration within our school, and there will be annual competency audits, carried out by NHS training team colleagues.

At Oak Field, approximately 40% of pupils currently require medicines to be administered during the school day, in accordance with their agreed Medication Administration Records/Care Plans, and parent/carer permission. Some of these pupils have been prescribed multiple medicines, and others (approx 20%) may occasionally require emergency (or ‘rescue’) medication (such as buccal midazolam) to be administered. These medicines are stored centrally. Most of the pupils travel to and from school by bus, and many medicines need to be checked in and out of school daily. Many pupils need to take their medication with them when they go out of school, for example on trips or to their weekly swimming session at Harvey Hadden Sports Village.

On a day-to-day basis, the role will include the checking in and out of medicines, and measuring and administering them to the children and young people in accordance with their agreed Medication Administration Records or Care Plans, as above; this to include short-term medicines like antibiotics. This also to include identifying, querying, and acting upon any discrepancies, and communicating with parents/carers and others, eg when medicines are near their expiry date and a new prescription is needed. Where appropriate, and in liaison with school staff, the post holder will also be expected to support pupils in understanding their medication needs and in the self-administration of their medicines. Experience of medicines management/administration, of working with children, of working in a school, or of working in a residential or care setting would be an advantage, as would an interest in working with children and young people with SEN.

The successful candidate will receive training in medicines management and administration, and in areas such as Safeguarding and Child Protection. They will also be expected to undertake competency checks, and to be proactive in seeking and developing their own continuing professional development.  There is also always encouragement for all staff to participate in the wider life and enrichment activities of the school.

Working hours for this post are Mon-Fri 9.30am-2.30pm, term time only (22.5 hrs/week), inc 30 mins unpaid lunchbreak. There may be a small margin of flexibility within this.

Since Oak Field is a unique specialised educational setting within the city of Nottingham, we strongly advise that before you apply for this post you have a detailed look at our website, then have an informal telephone conversation with Patricia Lewis (Headteacher) to discuss this further. This opportunity is available in the weeks beginning Mon 14 and Mon 21 Sep between 9.30am and 5pm - please telephone the school on 0115 915 3265.

Applications close on: Monday 28th September 2020 at 9am

Provisional interview date: Thursday 1st October 2020 (Interviews will include a range of activities, including skills tests).
