Mechanic Light/Heavy Vehicle & Plant Technician

Salary Range: £24,801 - £26,925
         
Due to retirement of existing staff and an increase in workload, opportunities have arisen for three positions within Leicestershire County Council's Fleet Workshop Team. These will involve working in the team of fleet technicians to maintain Leicestershire County Council's fleet of light/heavy vehicles and plant. The successful candidates will assist with the Workshop Manager and Fleet Team in ensuring that the workshop service is effective and efficiently delivered, whilst maintaining equipment to a high and legally compliant standard.
   
Job Purpose:
To service and repair vehicles and plant in a safe, efficient and economic manner employing such skills and knowledge as may be required with due regard to current Technical and Health & Safety legislation.
   
Daily Activities:
• Inspect vehicle engine and mechanical/electrical components to diagnose issues accurately
• Conduct routine maintenance work (replacing fluids, lubricating parts etc.) aiming to maintain/improve vehicle functionality
• Attend to vehicle breakdowns
• Be on call out to attend to out of hours requirements
• Advise motorists on good vehicle use
• Repair or replace broken or dysfunctional parts and fix issues (e.g. leaks)
• Keep logs on work and issues
• Maintain equipment and tools in good condition
• Carry out routine servicing
• Prepare vehicle for MOT testing
• Carry out MOT testing
• Carry out workshop housekeeping   
                                 
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
 
• Experience of working in a fleet workshop or garage
• Experience of all aspects of heavy, light and passenger carrying vehicle repair and maintenance
• Experience of construction plant repairs
• Knowledge of specifications for varying types of vehicle e.g. LPG,HGV & Plant
• Technical competencies in Vehicle and Plant Construction and Design - understanding basic mechanical engineering principles, identifying suitable materials and tools and to be able to understand and interpret technical manuals and vehicle specifications.
