East Staffordshire Borough Council run and operate the 150 year old Stapenhill Cemetery and the newer smaller site in Rolleston. These locations provide a resting place for residents of all denominations from across East Staffordshire and neighbouring areas. As well as offering burial services the Cemetery team can assist in finding a relative’s grave, provide guidance on the completion of burial paperwork and have responsibility for monitoring contractor performance to ensure the visual appearance of the Cemetery is of the highest standard.
This role enables the Cemetery to open at a weekend and provide visitors with the chance to interact with an officer outside of traditional office opening hours. Subsequently, the post holder will be required to work Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays 11.00am to 3.00pm. The successful applicant will be required to oversee burials and ensure that they meet the statutory legal requirements. Other duties include the processing of burial paperwork and the maintenance of accurate burial records.
The successful applicant will be expected to be able to work on their own and use their own initiative. Additionally, there is a need to possess good communication skills and be able to handle sensitive information and situations
Whilst the post holder is required to work alone they will be expected to work with the Cemetery and wider Open Spaces teams. Subsequently, experience of working in a team and handling contractors is essential along with knowledge of working with partner agencies. Basic office and word processing skills are also an advantage.
Although the core hours are weekend working, the post holder will be expected to provide cover for the weekday team during periods of leave/absence. Furthermore, there will be an occasional requirement to oversee weekday evening burials. Subject to satisfactory completion of the probationary period there will be an opportunity to complete a formal qualification in Cemetery management.
